The Catholic School

T

he Catholic school has a vital role in the faith formation of our children - at nursery, primary and post-primary levels.   The Catholic school system has been built up by the sacrifices of generations of our Catholic people who cherished education and in particular who understood the contribution which Catholic schools make to the mission of the Church and, indeed, their contribution to the well-being of society.   Our Catholic schools are certainly distinctive, distinctive in their religious dimension, religious education and religious formation.  They carry a spiritual hallmark founded upon the Gospel.  They are distinctive but they are not divisive.  A Catholic school must be a caring community of learning, prayer and worship.   It does have a very distinctive ethos, an ethos which we perhaps take all too much for granted but which is so often commented on so favourably and with approbation by visitors of other Christian and of non-Christian traditions.

Sacramental Preparation
St Luke's, St Mark’s Primary Schools & Scoil na Fuiseoige

Children attending schools in the parish receive religious education throughout their school experience.  Running alongside this is sacramental preparation in the Parish involving both children and parents in primary three, four and seven.  Parents are expected to attend a parish meeting and enrol their child for the appropriate sacrament.  This pre-sacramental preparation is vital in helping parents to recognise and assume their responsibility with regard to handing on their Catholic faith to their children.

Sacramental Preparation
Children of the Parish attending other schools

Parents are the first teachers of their children. The schools will support parents of the parish in this task.  Those who choose, however, to send their children to other schools are at the same time accepting full responsibility for the religious upbringing of their children.  This is their right and privilege.  The Parish will endeavour to ensure that, with the parents’ co-operation, these children will be adequately prepared for the reception of the sacraments.  It is important that parents enrol their child for the appropriate sacrament with the Parish, in the first month of the school year i.e., September.  Parents will then be kept fully informed regarding the parish pre-sacramental programme and are expected to participate.
