arents, sponsors and parish priests are to take care
that a name is not given which is foreign to
Christian sentiment.

[Try to give your child at least one Christian name,
that is a saint’s name.]
For registration purposes a photocopy of your
child’s Birth Certificate may be required by the

“What Do you ask of God’s Church for your child? -
Baptism.”
Can. 849 Baptism, the gateway to the sacraments, is
necessary for salvation, either by actual reception
or at least by desire. By it people are freed from
sins, are born again as children of God and, made
like to Christ by an indelible character, are
incorporated into the Church. It is validly
conferred only by a washing in real water with the
proper form of words.
Asking for baptism implies an acceptance of the
training your child in the practice of the faith.
You will be the first teachers of your children in
the ways of faith. This is both a tremendous joy
and immense responsibility.
“You have asked to have your child baptised. Do you
clearly understand what you are undertaking? - We do.”
On the day of your child’s baptism the priest
addresses you:
“You
have asked to have your child baptised. In doing so
you are accepting the responsibility of training him
/ her in the practise of the faith. It will be your
duty to bring him / her up to keep God’s
commandments as Christ taught us, by loving God and
our neighbour. Do you clearly understand what you
are undertaking?”
In order to help parents understand this commitment
and respond positively to it, the two members of the
Baptism Preparation Team will visit the parents to
give an outline and a simple explanation of the
baptismal ceremony. Preparation for your child’s
baptism is important. To allow time for preparation
at least one months notice is required for baptism.
