Extra-Ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

F

or over forty years now, since the Second Vatican Council, the Catholic Church laity have been encouraged to participate more actively in the life of the Church.  The Council’s Decree on the Laity, spoke of two ways this lay participation can be carried out.  Firstly, by spreading the Gospel message in every area of life and secondly, where the need arises, by participating in the liturgical ministry of the Church.  Over the last few years, it has become common to see lay people assisting the priest or deacon by acting as ‘Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion’.

Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion were first commissioned in St. Luke's Parish on Thursday the 21st of November 1985, the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lady by Fr Brendan Magee.  They assist the clergy in the distribution of Holy Communion at Mass on Sundays and Holy days and when necessary at weddings, funerals and weekday Masses.  They assist the priest so as the celebration of the Mass may not be unduly prolonged.  Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion receive ongoing spiritual, theological, and practical preparation to fulfil their role with knowledge and reverence.

Why Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion?

We have grown used to the terms ‘Special Minister’ or ‘Eucharistic Minister’ in describing those who assist in the distribution of Holy Communion.  The Church prefers the title ‘Extraordinary minister of Holy Communion’.  Why?

Extraordinary’, because in ideal circumstances the minister of Holy Communion is someone specifically ordained for that purpose – a deacon, a priest or a bishop.

Minister of Holy Communion’, because the word ‘Eucharist’ has a meaning much broader than simply Holy Communion – it can refer to the priestly offering of the Mass itself.  The scope of the Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion is precise, but tightly focussed: they offer the Body and Blood of the Lord to those otherwise unable to receive it.

The Apostolate to the Sick

Innumerable works of charity to the sick are constantly provided by the lay faithful either individually or through community apostolates. These constitute an important Christian presence to sick and suffering of the greatest importance. The lay faithful particularly assist the sick by being with them in difficult moments, encouraging them to receive the Sacraments of Penance and the Anointing of the Sick, by helping them to have the disposition to make a good individual confession as well as to prepare them to receive the Anointing of the Sick.  In this context the Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion also provide an invaluable Apostolate to the sick and housebound of our parish.
