winbrook is
situated in South-West Belfast near Dunmurry and a few miles
from Lisburn. It was intended to re-house families
displaced by Falls and Shankill redevelopment schemes. The
first allocation of eighty houses was in the Laburnum area.
This grew to approximately 1800 houses with a population of 7400
and a primary school enrolment of 1200. It was officially
opened by the then Prime Minister of Northern Ireland,
Mr
James Chichester-Clarke on the 17th of February
1971.
Twinbrook was initially part
of Derriaghy Parish but on the 1st of August 1976 it became
a parish in its own right. The Parish initially worshiped
in a temporary church, St Mark's, which went on to serve the
Parish of the Nativity (Poleglass). A second
temporary church, St Luke's, came from Sligo and served as the centre
of spiritual life of the parish until construction of a
permanent place of worship was complete.
The foundation stone of St
Luke's Church was blessed by Pope John Paul II on Sunday 30th
of September 1979 at Knock, Co. Mayo. The church was
dedicated on Sunday 22nd of March 1981, five years
after the establishment of the parish and ten years after the
estate of Twinbrook was first built.
In the booklet produced for
the church opening, the then Bishop, Most Reverend William J.
Philbin wrote,
"The opening of St
Luke's church will be noted with pleasure throughout all of
Down & Connor because your priests have sought help in all
the parishes of the Diocese. They have been received
with welcome and extraordinary generosity wherever they
went. Your benefactors knew that their charity was
well deserved and was needed in the circumstances of
particular difficulty in which your newly created parish
found itself. They will now recognise that their
donations were put to good account when they learn about
and, as we hope, come to visit this splendid new place of
worship in Twinbrook which is a monument to the faith and
the fellowship of the whole diocese of Down & Connor."
In 2000 the church
closed for some renovation work and was reopened and rededicated six months
later on Sunday the 23rd of July by the Most Reverend
Dr Patrick Walsh, Bishop of Down & Connor.
