Society is a world-wide organisation of lay people which was
founded by St Frederic Ozanam. He was born in Milan on the
23rd of April 1813. In 1833 he founded the
society in Paris along with other young students. He died
at Marseilles on the 8th of September 1853.
Placed under the patronage of St Vincent De Paul, the
Society seeks, in a spirit of love, to help those who are in
need, irrespective of their faith.
“To seek and find those who are forgotten,
to bring your love to the suffering and deprived.”
The Society's work, through person to person
contact, encompasses every form of aid, not just financial,
that alleviates suffering and loneliness and promotes the
dignity and integrity of mankind. The Society strives not
only to alleviate need but also to discover and redress the
situations which cause it.
Members of the Society are part time,
voluntary workers, who devote some of their time, talents
and resources to the service of their neighbour. Each group
of members is organised into a conference which is headed by
a President. Other executive officers include a
Vice-President, a Secretary and a Treasurer.
Meetings are a combination of prayer and
confidential reports on needy cases. It is at these
meetings that the required work and projects for the coming
week are discussed and acted upon.
Collections, which are taken up after all the
weekend Masses, provide the essential financial support to
enable us to defray the effects of poverty in our
community. The parishioners of St Luke’s have always been
most generous in this regard. Once again, your continued
support for this cause is much appreciated.
